Poor turnout expected for Election Day 2013

(11/03/13) - Without a Presidential or other high profile election, most political analysts expect a poor turnout for Election Day on Tuesday.

"Well I think this Tuesday will be a low turnout election, not much excitement about it," says political science professor Paul Rozycki. "Probably a turnout of 8 to 10 percent if we're lucky, and for that reason we may see some surprises. Sometimes in a low turnout election, a handful of votes can make all the difference."

Some local groups have made a point of trying to draw more people out to the polls. Burton police officers and volunteers have gone door-to-door reminding people of their town's police millage.

4-H Clubs of Genesee County have held Get Out the Vote drives, as well.

Last year, voters turned down a proposal to fund the MSU Extension office, which runs their program.

While the Genesee County Board of Commissioners found a way to keep the office running this year, the group is hoping it doesn't come down to this time around.

"I think it's important, because if he didn't have 4H, some of these kids I don't know where they'd be, honestly," says 4-H member Samantha Godfrey. "I just think it's a good outlet for most kids."
