Midland community remembers fallen police officers, firefighters

MIDLAND (WJRT) -

(12/01/13) - The color blue is a sign of peace and strength for some. Families, friends and the community are remembering loved ones who died in the line of duty.

It's part of Midland's Blue Light Project, and a ceremony was held at the Memorial Presbyterian Church.

"We're not mourning, we're remembering and reminding the families that we remember," said Trooper Joseph Rowley with the MSP Tri-Cities post.

The Blue Light Project works to remember and honor fallen police officers and firefighters.

"Not a lot of people understand a line of duty death and what that feels like for the family and sometimes when you connect with those that get it, you don't have to say anything, they just understand," said Stacy Darrow, who sits on the Blue Light committee.

Darrow's brother-in-law, Jeffrey Werda, was killed in the line of duty in 2011.

For those heroes still with us, it's a chance to comfort surviving family members like Darrow.

One by one, names of fallen officers were called and a family member placed a flower in a blue wreath.

It's a small gesture, that stands for strength, peace and honor.

"I think it warms their heart and makes them feel like their loved one has not been forgotten," Darrow said.

The church is shining a blue light on top of their steeple in support of the program. They're asking everyone to do the same at home, and put a blue light in their window.
