Sign up begins for Flint Toys for Tots

FLINT (WJRT) -

(12/02/13) - More than 7,000 children are expected to benefit from this year's Toys for Tots program in Flint. For the next two weeks, parents can register their children to receive something from Santa.

"If it wasn't for this organization, my nephews wouldn't have a Christmas this year," said Terri Libby, who is helping her brother apply for Toys for Tots.

There was a line outside the Toys for Tots building, 4425 South Saginaw in Flint, as parents started to sign up. One man asking for help was in an accident and now uses a walker.

"We've never had to do this before. He had a job. Now he's hurt," Libby said.

The line started forming about 4 a.m. Monday, even though there's no rush to apply for Toys for Tots.

"We're going to be here for two weeks," said Gary Stanley, Flint Toys for Tots director.

People say they just want to make sure they provide something for Christmas.

"It's already a stressful time. The holidays are so overwhelmed with being able to provide for your children. At least my children will be able to have a toy from Santa this Christmas," said Tekeisha Jamison.

"The toys will be handed out within 48 hours from the time that you sign up," Stanley said.

Toys for Tots is expanding its age range to include kids between 13 and 15.

"We're going to have toys from the first day, as they say, all the way to the last day," Stanley said.

To cover that pledge, Toys for Tots is asking you to donate a little more this year.

"We need plenty of toys brought in. We have boxes all over the county. Each year I've watched this program increase more and more. More needy kids in this community," Stanley said.

"There are four in the house. I'm the only one making money in the house right now and it's going to be hard for Christmas. I want to make sure mine are taken care of. Thank God for Toys for Tots," said Shirley Jones.

"I've been doing this many years now and it takes a lot of stress off me," said Angela Lynch.
