Genesee Co. neighbors trying to clear up Affordable Care Act confusion

CLIO (WJRT) -

(12/02/13) - The government may have worked out the bugs in the Affordable Care Act computer system, but there are plenty of people across the nation and here in Mid-Michigan who are still struggling to understand the new healthcare system.

There's been so much confusion surrounding the Affordable Care Act, they have plenty of questions.

Monday night, a group held a workshop at Mott Community College in Clio to try to provide answers.

A lot of people are just overwhelmed, but they are trying to weed through all this new information because in many cases it's their only shot at getting health insurance.

"I haven't had insurance for four years," said Juli Suuppi after the workshop.

But Suuppi says she needs to figure something out.

State Representative Pam Faris and the Genesee Health Plan are doing what they can to educate people on their options.

"We're trying to get experts in to help them get through this confusion and get them signed up for what they're eligible for and everyone has the options that are good for them out there," Faris said.

Part of the confusion dealt with the healthcare marketplace itself, but the feds promise it's working better now.

"My understanding is nobody I know got kicked off today," Faris said.

That's a big reason why Suuppi hadn't tried to sign up in the marketplace yet.

But now that she's armed with information, she plans to shop around.

"I'm just going to have to go on and shop, see what's there," she said.

Johnny Dayonot and Clarissa Camez haven't been to the online marketplace yet, but they might now that they know more about it.

"He has a lot of doctors he has to go see and a lot of prescriptions that unfortunately under his current plan are going up next year," Camez said.

Faris says you don't have to get online to sign up for healthcare. You can mail in an application or apply by phone.
