Recall petition against Gloria Platko denied by election commission

SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) -

(12/03/13) - A recall petition against a Mid-Michigan township clerk, who was recorded using a racial slur, has been denied for now.

Buena Vista Township clerk Gloria Platko used the racial slur in her description of the township supervisor.

A change in the state law regarding recall petitions might have helped Platko avoid a recall attempt.

The recall petition was denied by the Saginaw County Election Commission. The reason, according to the commission's three members - all of the language is not factual.

"It can't be conclusions and opinions, it has to be factual and clear, and that means the whole wording, not just a piece of it," said Susan Kaltenbach, Saginaw County clerk.

Kaltenbach says a new state law has toughened the requirements for starting a recall petition against an elected official.

It was back on April 22 when Platko's use of the racial slur to describe township supervisor Dwayne Parker was played during a Buena Vista Township trustees meeting. Because of the new law, a recall petition could not be started when the recording became national news.

"They also had to wait until the person is in office for at least one year," Kaltenbach said.

Buena Vista resident Kelly Coleman filed the petition exactly one year and a day after Platko was sworn into office. He says he now has a better idea on the wording and might submit a new petition.

Township resident Frances Hayes believes it's time to move on.

"I don't like what Gloria said, but Gloria had the right to say it, as bad as it was, it was a mistake, she has apologized for it, let's move on," he said.

Platko says it's been a rough several months, but she has no plans on resigning.

"Even on my down days, I've never given a thought to stepping down," she said. "I'm here to fight to get my township back on the road to where it once was."

Coleman also has 10 days to appeal the Saginaw County Election Commission's decision to the circuit court.
