(12/03/13) - A national effort to promote the true meaning of the holidays is catching on here in Mid-Michigan.
Many local organizations are promoting "Giving Tuesday" in hopes of inspiring you.
Inside the warehouse at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, volunteers spend hours sorting and packing up food for those in need.
On Tuesday, their effort took on new meaning.
"It makes really good sense to follow all the shopping and commerce of the holiday with something that is really essential to our community, which is the giving," said Kara Ross, of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
This Tuesday was 'Giving Tuesday', fairly new campaign started by the UN to inspire others to give back to their community after the rush of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
"I think it's a great idea. We are here not knowing that. We do this every year, a couple times a year and we really enjoy it," said Scott Lawson, Food Bank volunteer.
"I think it's a wonderful idea. There are so many more things that are more important than gifts and all the things we buy, this is just as important, if not more important to give back to the community," said Food Bank volunteer Beth Schell.
Across town at the United Way of Genesee County, employees are also raising awareness about the campaign.
Monica Hanna's priority is to monitor social media sites and blast viewers with information about 'Giving Tuesday.'
"We've been pushing out on our Facebook and Twitter especially. You can actually visit on our homepage and we have a flyer that you can fill out and it's called an 'unselfie' and that's pushed through 'Giving Tuesday' and shows how you can give back," she said.
You can visit United Way of Genesee County's website HERE.
"We kinda take for granted all these presents we've bought and we're sorta all stuck with all these things and this is just a great reminder to folks of what the season is all about," said Jamie Gaskin, of the United Way of Genesee County.
If you'd like to celebrate 'Giving Tuesday', you're asked to make a pledge to help your community in some way - either by a financial donation or volunteering at a local charity.
