Consumers Energy to turn power back on at MaryAnn Apartments

FLINT (WJRT) -

(12/04/13) - After dealing with no heat or electricity for two days, tenants at MaryAnn Apartments, on West Court Street in Flint, are getting some good news - just in time for the temperature drop.

Consumers Energy says it will turn the power back on sometime Wednesday, even though it hasn't received a request from the property manager to do so.

Consumers told us, Tuesday, the bill has been paid, but the property manager needed to call the utility and put in a restoration request.

The people who live at Flint's MaryAnn Apartments on West Court Street say they paid their bills, but they didn't have any electricity. We looked at their lease and it says the landlord is responsible for paying the electric bill. Consumers tells us they didn't.

"What is a baby supposed to do in the dark all day in the cold? What is she supposed to do?" said Erica Keene, who lives in the building with her husband and 2-year-old daughter.

Keene says living in the dark in December is tough enough, but her daughter Makaila is the one suffering.

"I didn't have a chance to buy Christmas and afford a tree before," she said. "This is her first Christmas and I was so proud of it, and she was so excited and now we have no power and she's so let down."

Neighbors at Maryann Apartments didn't have power since 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Their lease says ALLtimate Property Management is their landlord, and they will pay for electricity. ABC12 News called Consumers Energy and they told us the power was off because no one paid the bill.

"I don't have extra money, I don't have another place to go, I just moved in and I had faith this was going to be home, but instead it's like living in a homeless shelter," said Beverly Trowsse, who just moved in last week.

Keene bundled up her baby and was shelling out extra money to stay at a hotel room Tuesday night.

Her husband says this is the third time in eight months their power has been turned off.

"If it was just me, I would tough it out, but I have a little daughter, she doesn't need to go through this," said Eric Watson, Erica's husband.

We tried contacting ALLtimate Property Management but they did not return our message as of Tuesday evening.
