(12/04/13) - It's the season for festive holiday displays, but fire departments are warning homeowners to be careful with their decorations.
A Flushing Township husband and wife died in a fire Saturday morning. Police say the fire likely started in the room where Christmas lights and decorations had just been set up.
Michele and Michael Behan had tried a new Pinterest project on their artificial tree, and there were fabric bows near the lights.
We caught up with the Flint fire chief, Wednesday. He says this is something they're concerned about every holiday season.
Here are a few tips he shared with us.
He says it's very important to make sure the cords on your lights are in good work order and they're not frayed or damaged.
Also, don't overload your home with too many lights.
Christmas Trees are another big thing to keep an eye on.
A real Christmas tree will get dry very quickly, so make sure you're giving it plenty of water, and keep it away from any heaters or fire places.
State police are still investigating the cause behind the Flushing Township fire.
