Red Kettle donations down across Mid-Michigan

Posted: Updated:

(12/05/13) - The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign is in full swing, but this year, donations are coming in slow.
The organization is counting on more people to help. Donations are down in Saginaw, Bay, Midland and Genesee counties by $5,000 or more compared to last year. Genesee County is behind by as much as 10 percent.

"It could be the economy, it could be the job loss in our community," said Major Mike Myers, from Bay County's Salvation Army.

Less money means fewer people will get the help they need. The organization that assists so many is now asking that people dig a little deeper to make a difference.

"We're not so far down that we don't think we can make the goal," said Major David Luft, from Saginaw County's Salvation Army.

This year, there is a shorter period between Thanksgiving and Christmas and Salvation Army officials believe that might be a reason they've seen the drop.
