New Saginaw Boxing Club goes toe-to-toe with teen crime

(12/04/13) - A new boxing club in Saginaw is going toe-to-toe with teen-crime.

Kids aren't just learning the sport; they're getting involved in the community while training with the Saginaw Boxing Club.

But that's not all these kids are getting out of their time in the ring.

"They learn self discipline, they learn respect, it's also in our contract they can't be around drugs, alcohol, swearing," said Efrain Garcia, a trainer and a founder of the club.

The Saginaw Boxing Club is a double whammy.

They just opened on Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church on Hancock Street, and 18 kids are already enrolled.

Anyone ages seven and a half to 40 can join, but their goal is to teach kids to roll with the punches and stay out of temptation on the streets.

"It'll be a good experience for them to do something different, to take them away from the life they're at, something new," said 20-year-old Valentin Garcia, Efrain's nephew.

It also gets them involved in their community.

Instead of a membership fee, the club only asks for four hours of community service a month.

"Too many kids are seeing too much stuff because they don't have no safe environment to go, or they don't have enough money to go to these sports event," Efrain said.

They train every night from 6-8 p.m., Monday-Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church.
