Leaf pickup ends in Flint, citations possible for noncompliance

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) -

(12/05/13) - Flint's fall leaf removal is over, but crews have been spotted cleaning the streets this week.

The city's blight director said citations could be handed out to those who didn't follow the removal rules.

"Myself and the eight neighborhood safety officers will be out and basically, (we'll) give a warning," said Blight Director Raul Garcia. "If people don't comply, that's when we'll issue a citation. We don't want to give a citation. We want people to comply."

This was the first year residents were required to bag or can their leaves. Sweeping them into the street was not allowed like it has been in previous years.

But some still did.

Garcia said crews will be out again Friday, paying close attention to storm drain areas to try to prevent clogs.

"We need to do that in order to make sure our streets stay clean," he said.

Leaves blocking the storm drains can lead to flooding during spring runoff and rain.

Bagged leaves will no longer be picked up. That ended Nov. 30.

Environmental Wood Solutions (EWS) will accept leaves from Flint residents, at a special reduced rate, until Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013. Proof of residency is required.

EWS is located at 1811 James P. Cole Blvd., near Hamilton Ave., in Flint.

Hours for drop off services are as follows:

Monday-Friday: 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Saturday: 7 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Drop off service ends Saturday, Dec. 21.

According to the city, EWS will charge residents the following reduced rates for bagged leaves:

Personal auto (as many as will fit):  $10

Personal truck (as many as will fit): $20

Trailer, 8' and under: $10

Trailer, 9'-16': $20

Trailer, 16' and over: Price to be determined by load size

For more information, please call EWS at 810-234-6160.

Residents with bagged leaves not wishing to use this service are encouraged to store bagged leaves in garages, sheds or other sheltered areas until yard waste pickup resumes in April 2014.
