Spreading kindness at Flushing Middle School

FLUSHING (WJRT) -

(12/6/13) - Friday, the team spirit was alive at Flushing Middle School. A group of volunteer students and Special Olympians came together for an inspiring event.

Paige Deitering, an event organizer, was wearing a T-shirt reading, "Kindness Equals Greatness", which was the powerful message of the day.

"The goal is for us to be able to help kids with special needs, like today, we're having everyone come to the gym, we're gonna help and have some fun," Deitering said.

Guest Speaker Jason Buchan helped kick off Project Unify at the school. It's an annual event that brings together students and Genesee County Special Olympians.

"Mr. Gill here has really established an incredible event where these students not only hear some good messages but also involve themselves in helping special olympians which is an incredible thing," Buchan said.

For this dedicated group of students, it's not just about the athletic games, it's about a empowering each other and sharing in kindness.

"These kids are coming in and yeah they may have something that is not completely the same as we do but we should realize we're all the same person and it doesn't matter what you are or how you are we should just accept people for who they are," Deitering said.

After a brief assembly and some introductions, the Special Olympians were ready to do what they do best - compete. The students helped coach them along, cheered for them and joined in on the fun.
