Lapeer neighbors raising money for 20 people displaced in November fire

(12/08/13) - About 20 people are without a home this holiday season after a devastating fire ripped through downtown Lapeer in November.

They're struggling, but not forgotten. Neighbors are working to raise money and help them get back on their feet.

They held a big fundraiser Sunday night.

"The Red Cross stepped in, but they were only able to get them three nights in a hotel and that's the end of it, so it's not enough obviously," said Tom Golson, who helped organize the fundraiser.

Golson is a musician and he often plays at Calvelli's Eatery and Spirits.

He wanted to do something for the displaced people, so he's doing what he does best and invite two other bands to play at the restaurant.

"100 percent of the money is going to go the fire victims," he said.

The $10 cover charge goes to a fire fund and so does part of the restaurant's profits.

"Terrible fire, I'm glad we're here helping out and supporting a good cause," said Dave Lathangue of Lapeer, who took his family to the fundraiser.

The nonprofit Love INC is the head of the fundraiser.

They'll help these families find new clothes, kitchen supplies, furniture - everything they lost.

"We just want to get them back on their feet and do right for the people," Golson said.
