(12/09/13) - A Mid-Michigan community is coming together in a big way to help a teenager battling cancer.
Now, they're hoping you'll join their fight.
A lot can change in just a matter of weeks. Sixteen-year-old Cassie Anderson's family knows all to well about that.
"She called home with a pain in her side, so we took her to the doctor, they sent her to the hospital for tests and we found out that night," said Laura Anderson, Cassie's mom.
The Caro student was diagnosed with a form of ovarian cancer.
That was less than two months ago. Since then, she's undergone surgery, chemo, lost her hair and is scheduled for a second surgery.
"It was a complete shock, she was healthy," Laura said.
"I was pretty scared," Cassie said. "Some days I'm OK, some days I'm not, it's just a roller coaster."
Doctors are hopeful Cassie will win her battle, but as she continues to fight, medical bills are mounting.
Now, the Caro community is helping to ease that burden. A fundraiser will be held this Saturday night at the Moose Lodge in Caro.
"We've all had hard times, but something like this really puts pressures on a family and Cassie is young, she has a lot of life ahead of her, so to see her go through this is very hard," said Deb Milot, event organizer.
The benefit dinner hosted by friends and a local band is just the latest in a strong showing of support for Cassie.
Most recently, her sister, other siblings and dad shaved their head for her. Now they're hopeful for a strong turnout this Saturday.
"Thank you for everything you've done. Please be at the event. I will be there if I can," Cassie said.
