(12/09/13) - Gavin Smith is on a tight deadline. Thursday, HGTV's reality show, "You Live in What?" is paying a visit to his home and photography studio. It happens to be the old fire hall in Linden.
"A little exciting, a little nerve-wracking. I think it's the most stressful time I've ever had in my life," Smith said.
Smith knows about stress - he's the Detroit Lions team photographer. Let's just say he was looking for some place unique to call home.
"I eventually told my realtor to find me the ultimate man cave, and we ended up coming to look at this place, and a few minutes later, I put an offer in on it," he said.
HGTV's producers read about him and his project online.
"They told us, yeah, we're coming, and then out of nowhere, they told us you have about two weeks and then we're in route, so we knew it was coming, we just didn't know it was coming that quick," Smith said.
Smith had been slowly gutting the 105-year-old building for a year or so, but now, the pressure is on to have it camera ready.
"Probably one of the biggest challenges here is there isn't a single wall that is straight or a single floor that's straight, from parking fire trucks," he said.
Smith is going the extra mile to find items to help make his home extra special. Most of the materials used are reclaimed Michigan wood and metal.
"We just got a set of doors off the MGM Grand Casino in Detroit, some old glass doors, and those will actually be the glass doors that open into a glass stained garage, where I'll keep my sports car here in the basement," he said.
In case you're wondering where the fire pole is - there isn't one, at least not right now.
"We're trying to find a place to put one. It seems like every corner is used up, but I'm not giving up yet on it. We're going to try and put one in," Smith said.
This particular episode of "You Live in What?" will air on HGTV sometime next year.
