Anonymous donor pays electric bill for Lighthouse Outreach Center

Posted: Updated:

(12/10/13) - A place where people in the Saginaw area go to keep warm or get a cup of coffee will stay open - for now.

It was Friday when we told you the Lighthouse Outreach Center was preparing to close because of an overdue electric bill.

The person running it was hoping for a Christmas miracle. She got one.

"Two months ago, I was going to give up," said Pastor Carrolynn Summers.

Summers started the Lighthouse Outreach Center in 1999 with her husband, who passed in 2005. She has had health problems, and then the center owed $1,200 for an electric bill.

It's a place where the less fortunate come for free clothing, a cup of coffee, a place to warm up.

Summers was preparing to close the outreach center because of the unpaid utility bill, which was due Jan. 3, but then someone heard about the problem.

"The electric bill is paid, I'm sure, I am sure, in fact this lady paid the electric bill, she paid the $1,200," Summers said.

The family who paid the bill wants to remain anonymous. Not only was the electric bill paid, the family will pay for a dumpster to remove furniture that was damaged because the roof leaks. Summers says a number of other people have stopped by to offer help as well.

"It touches my heart, because these people can't do it physically, but they are willing to help get behind me and help me to keep it going," Summers said.

Kathryn Umphrey and her husband Jeff drove up from Clio to help in anyway they are needed.

"I didn't hear all of the story, but I couldn't get it off my mind," Umphrey said. "Need the help with money, financially, whatever, because Saginaw needs this, the homeless need this."

"Now I have hope, now I am excited again, I'm excited in the human race again, I'm excited about people helping other people again," Summers said.

The Lighthouse Outreach Center still could use some help with finances or clothing donations. You can help the center by making a donation or by dropping of clothing at Team One Credit Union.

Lighthouse Outreach Center is located at 808 Janes Street. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday 12:30 - 4 p.m. Contact Pastor Summers by calling 989-928-9096.
