(12/10/13) - For the first time ever, a woman will lead General Motors. Mary Barra is stepping in as the new CEO in January after 33 years with the automaker.

The appointment shakes up what's long been an all men's club, and women in the auto industry are calling GM's announcement a major step forward.

"It's been a boys' club for so long and I think it's really going to be really fun for her," said Jeannine Ferguson, General Sales Manager at Applegate Chevrolet.

Ferguson was just named their new general sales manager, but has been in the business for three decades.

She loves that Barra is a smart, successful women, able to balance a family on top of it all.

"I think it's a different look, a different vision, a different attitude possibly, so time will tell," she said.

"For me, it finally gives a true recognition that we can do this job and we can do it just as good as any other male counterpart out there," said Lisa Kusey-Rechsteiner, with Graff Chevrolet.

Kusey-Rechsteiner is the general manager at Graff Chevrolet and she says she still sees obstacles in the industry for women.

"It's a constant battle to prove yourself day in and day out," she said. "I am currently now actually buying into the location that I'm at so I'm a managing partner and you know, compared to my male counterparts it takes a little bit more to prove that we're able to do it."

Barra will take that top GM spot next month.
