(12/11/13) - There's no denying the appeal of the ugly holiday sweater.
"Take anything you would put on your tree and just throw it on yourself, and make a big splat of gaudiness," said Kim King, Auburn Jaycees member.
It might look like your office's wild holiday party, but it isn't. Plenty of gaudiness, and a little tackiness, will be on display Saturday morning when the Jaycees of Auburn host their first ever Ugly Sweater Run 5K.
"Hundreds of ugly sweaters running through Auburn, just going crazy, trying to get to the finish line," said Erin Poltorak, Auburn Jaycees president.
Groups of carolers will line the course, which loops through town, and begins and ends in Auburn Park. Every finisher earns a snowflake medal.
"We also have our nice reindeer for our first place finishers in each age group, and we'll also give away prizes for ugliest sweater, fastest reindeer, and cutest elf," Poltorak said.
Proceeds will benefit Bay City's Good Samaritan Rescue Mission.
"The Jaycees, our primary mission, is to learn leadership skills through service to our community. For a lot of our events, we pick different non-profits that our funds can go to. Everything we do goes right back into our community in Bay County," Poltorak said.
We put the call out to our ABC12 viewers on Facebook to help us find the ugliest of the ugly holiday sweaters, and you guys came through in a big way. The ugliest of the ugliest, voted by our viewers was a piece of handiwork made by Jim Aspen and his daughter. So ugly, that it's beautiful.
The Jaycees hope Saturday's race will inspire others to get crafty, give back, and get fit, while making a fashion statement along the way.
"Anyone can own the ugliness in the Ugly Sweater Run, so put whatever you've got together, and come on out," said Sarah Suchy, Auburn Jaycees member.
You can register for Saturday's Ugly Sweater Run either online, or in person.
