Cold weather keeps repair shops busy

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(12/11/13) - The cold blast isn't just affecting people, it's also taking its toll on cars this week.

Mid-Michigan repair shops are staying busier than normal.

One of the main problems drivers are running into is tire problems. That's why drivers need to pay extra attention to their cars, especially this time of year.

"It's almost unbearable, I don't know how these drivers do it," said Bryan Nivan.

Nivan is one of several drivers who ran into some car trouble recently.

"I had my brother's car, it was an antifreeze leak, I had to drive it for a couple of days, he took the other car so I was in it with no heat, so it's all fixed thank God," he said.

This is a busy time of year for Mid-Michigan car shops like Kurtz-Hillman Automotive. This week, they've already worked on about 50 cars.

"A lot of batteries, a lot of no starts, a lot of poorly running vehicles, no heat, cooling leaking issues. This weather really upsets a vehicle," said Troy Kelly, co-owner of Kurtz Hillman Automotive.

Kelly says motorists need to pay extra attention to their cars to avoid running into issues like what Todd Geyer came across.

"I have to go out and start it a couple of times because I'll start it and it will die, and I have to start it up again because it's just really cold and it's not starting the way it should," he said.

Just some tips from drivers: make sure to keep basic supplies in your car, a cell phone and a flash light just in case you get stuck.
