FPD prepares to use social media, updated website to share information

FLINT (WJRT) -

(12/13/13) - A number of Mid-Michigan police departments use social media to get information out and to gather tips from the public.

The Flint Police Department is in the process of developing Facebook and Twitter accounts to do the same, according to Chief James Tolbert.

"If we want to connect with the community, we have to talk with the community the way the community talks," Tolbert said.

The accounts could be online within weeks.

Tolbert said the department's website will be revamped with some new tools, too.

It should be ready right about the same time.

Improvements have already been made. Flint Police are now listing 24-hour major crime summaries. Armed robberies and shots fired are some of the crimes recorded.

Tolbert said they'll likely work with someone who can access data from the records management system and upload it so people can search the city.

"They will be able to put that on a Web-based page where anybody can go to their computer, put in their parameters, hit a button and you're going to see all the crime that happens in your block," Tolbert said.

Tolbert talked about the social media and website updates the same day the city released a list of "Calls for Service" for the year.

The data released shows a decrease of the most serious call types - breaking and entering, weapon assaults and armed robberies included. That's nearly 30 percent from January through October compared to last year. Armed Robbery calls had the largest decline at 40 percent.
