GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(12/13/13) - One of the first big winter storms of the season means big business for plow drivers and hardware stores.

ABC12 News caught up with people who started preparing for this weather in advance.

They're getting their shovels and much more.

Many people are loading up on carts of salt. It's going fast at stores like The Home Depot in Flint. Mario Harris was stocking up on several bags for himself and his mother.

"I got five so I'll give her two and I'll keep three," he said.

Customers are trickling in the store to buy everything from shovels to snow blowers.

"Making sure they have enough oil for their snow throwers. We have quite a selection of snow throwers in stock and we also are going to be receiving an emergency shipment tomorrow morning," said Mike Thom, the assistant manager at The Home Depot.

"I'm looking forward to the snow. Just not looking forward to the shoveling, so I think this works out pretty well," said DeWain Molter.

"I try to get the snow blowers together so that way you're not waiting until it happens and then when you go out there to start it up, it won't start so now you have to get the shovels and do it the old fashioned way, so I try to be as prepared as much as possible," Harris said.

Plow drivers are also getting their trucks ready. They plan to do most of their plowing and salting after the majority of the snow falls. They'll still be on the roads as it all comes down.

"We go over the blades, make sure everything is working properly and which this facility really helps out, everything is in a heated building," said Ron Sides with Sides Services.

Sides says he and his crews go out as soon as a couple of inches fall.
