(12/18/13) - There is disappointing news for hundreds of workers in Mid-Michigan just one week before Christmas. Employees at TRW Automotive, in Saginaw, have learned their plant will be closing on
A plant closure in Saginaw will leave hundreds jobless, and cost the city of Saginaw a lot of money.

(12/17/13) - Officials at auto supplier TRW announced it will close its plant on East Genesee and lay off 600 workers.

Company officials say it will happen Feb. 16.

John Wilkerson, a spokesperson for the company, says the facility hasn't been able to gain new business awards. They have received word from General Motors that it plans to resource production to alternative suppliers.

The company is known for making braking and steering systems.

Earlier in the fall, Crains Detroit business reported that the auto parts supplier pulled out of a $700 million brake contract with GM.

Those components are built at the plant in Saginaw. TRW bought it in 2008 from Delphi, who was bankrupt.

A media statement from TWR says, "TRW today announced its intention to close the Saginaw, Michigan braking facility.  The Saginaw plant has approximately 600 employees involved in the manufacture of rotors and knuckles and the assembly of corner modules. It is anticipated that employees will be impacted February 16, 2014 and assistance and support will be provided in helping prepare them for future employment at that time, subject to discussions with the hourly workers' union."

TRW is one of the world's largest auto suppliers. The company manufactures electronics, braking systems, and air bags, among other things.

They have several plants throughout Michigan, including one in Tyrone Township in Livingston County. The other facilities are located throughout metro Detroit, including Livonia and Wixom.
