No business like "snow business"

Posted: Updated:

(12/17/13) - There's no business like "snow business", and many Mid-Michigan businesses that rely on the white-fluffy stuff are thankful for an early start to their seasons.

That includes one Saginaw County ski slope that recorded one of its earliest openings ever.

Apple Mountain in Thomas Township opened last Friday, Dec. 13. No bad luck there.

Their all-time record came the year an early blizzard allowed them to open on Dec. 4.

Even without that head start, Apple Mountain thinks this year has the potential to break other records.

"What's unusual about it is the amount of snow that we have, our base right now is at three feet, and that's to us, incredible. The amount of snow that's on the ground makes people want to get out to ski so we're really happy to see it," said Marketing Director Kathy Schofield.

The slopes open at 5 p.m. each night this week through Thursday.

Then on Friday, Apple Mountain starts regular business hours, when they open at 10 a.m.

Already they're off to a good start. Typically they aim to open around Christmas so Mid-Michigan kids have something fun to do on winter break.

The snow on the ground right now is part Mother Nature, and part man-made.

With predictions of a long, cold winter, the folks at Apple Mountain think the "white gold" is here to stay.

"Last year was OK, what this does is gets, jump starts the season. And you know from your experience in life that once something is jump started it seems to take off. So we are very enthusiastic about this year," Schofield said.

Mt. Holly in northern Oakland County is open as well.
