Police: Man arrested, charged could be connected to other crimes involving elderly people

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) -

(12/18/13) - He's in jail now, but police suspect Robert Gill has been targeting and robbing elderly people, in the Genesee County area, for months.

Gill, 50, was arrested in Flint last week - Dec. 11.

Police want to hear from you if you think you've been approached by Gill or if you've given him money.

Gill is currently charged with two felonies - one count of armed robbery and one count of first degree home invasion connected to an alleged crime at an elderly man's home near the 2000 block of Pierce in Flint.

Michigan State Police Trooper Jason Mercier said Gill approached another homeowner, she called police, they arrested Gill in the area and were able to connect him to that other incident.

Investigators strongly believe Gill has been targeting elderly people all over Genesee County for months.

What's done has been reported like this - a well-dressed man fitting Gill's description, in some cases driving a Cadillac, knocks on a door and claims to have car trouble, according to police.

The man claims his wife has been in an accident and needs money for a tow, for example.

Mercier said the man promises to come back with the cash, but never does and recently, the man has been more aggressive, forcing his way into homes.

A surveillance picture made its way around online earlier this year. It was posted by concerned citizens, in the Flint area, asking people to be watching for a handyman who didn't deliver. Police said it's Gill and that he has quite a criminal history in at least three different states.

Mt. Morris Township Police believe he's been in their area targeting people, too.

If you think you've been approached by Gill or have given him money, please call Mercier at 810-237-6923.

Gill has a court hearing scheduled Thursday.
