Massive data hack may have exposed card information for Target shoppers

Posted: Updated:

(12/18/13) - Millions of Target shoppers may have had their personal information exposed.

Wednesday evening, a spokesman for the retailer confirmed the U.S. Secret Service is investigating a reported credit card data hack.

Sources say it may have happened at the height of the holiday shopping season - from Black Friday to Sunday, Dec. 15.

Security blogger Brian Krebs says the data on magnetic scripts on both credit and debit cards may have been compromised while checking out in stores.

That information includes: Your name, account number, expiration date and security code.

Krebs quotes one source as saying, "this will put its mark up there with some of the largest retail breaches to date."

Nearly all Target stores could be involved, but Target has yet to comment on the matter.

Sources also say that online shoppers appear to be safe.
