WASHINGTON, D.C. (WJRT) -

(12/18/13) - The U.S. Senate has approved a bipartisan budget deal that the House of Representatives overwhelming approved last week.

The bill does not include an extension of federal unemployment benefits, meaning thousands of people statewide will lose those benefits come Dec. 28, 2013.

Wayne Vroman, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, thinks lawmakers should extend those benefits.

Most Democrats want to extend the benefits now, but many Republicans are worried about the ballooning cost of the program.

More than $260 billion has been paid out since 2008. The cost to extend the federal benefits for another year is about $26 billion.
