Flint, Burton Police to hire graduates of recent academy

Posted: Updated:

(12/19/13) - Friday is graduation day for 13 police officer recruits.

Seven of them already have jobs lined up right here in Mid-Michigan.

Five are headed to the Flint Police Department. Two will be going to Burton.

Eighteen started, back in September, at Mott Community College's Law Enforcement Regional Training Academy.

It was the largest class in the last 10 years, even with Mott running two academies each year.

"We're gonna put them right to work," said Flint Police Chief James Tolbert. "They're going to hit the ground running Monday."

Each officer will be paired with a training officer.

Tolbert said it will bring the number of sworn officers in Flint up to nearly 130.

"We're pretty excited," said Burton Police Chief Tom Osterholzer. "We're going to have them walk across the stage in our uniform and we think that's pretty cool."

A few hours after graduation, those two and one more officer will be sworn in at Burton City Hall.

Just last month, three officers were sworn in just days after voters approved a millage to support the police department.

"We have one more to go to get to 36. We're actually doing some interviews today," Osterholzer said.

More could still be on the way, according to Osterholzer.

"At the last council meeting, the council and the mayor discussed getting us to 42 as quickly as possible so we may not even pause," he said. "If that's the case, we're going to have six more to go after these seven. So we're just going to keep on rolling."

Osterholzer said more information should be coming out soon. The money to fund those officers would come from the general fund.

The new hires coming on now, in both Flint and Burton, are funded by voter approved millages.
