Bay County Salvation Army receives gold coin donation

BAY COUNTY (WJRT) -

(12/19/13) - A single coin has put the Bay County Salvation Army more than $1,000 closer to its Red Kettle goal. Someone dropped a gold coin in the bucket this week. Donations are down this year, and this mysterious gift could not have come at a better time.

It happened outside the Walgreens on Euclid Road in Bay City. A kind person made a rare donation.

"I've never had one or saw one," said Major Mike Meyers, of the Bay County Salvation Army.

Meyers says someone wrapped a gold coin inside a dollar bill and left it in the kettle.

"It's a one ounce gold coin from South Africa," said Don Rapson. of Flying Eagle Coins and More in Bay City.

The krugerrand will make a big difference for the Salvation Army. Rapson agreed to pay $1,180 for the coin, money that will go a long way to support the organizations programs.

"I want to thank whoever donated it. Through your giving, you're going to make a difference in our community not only now but throughout the year," Meyers said.

A big help, especially since the Bay County organization is about $18,000 short of its holiday season goal, but Myers is not giving up hope. They'll keep the bells ringing.

"Right up to Christmas Eve," Meyers said.

Believing that the mysterious donor will motivate more kind people to dig deep and donate.

"We're just doing the very best with what we've got. Doing the most good with the money to help others in our community," Meyers said.
