State of Emergency issued in Shiawassee County

SHIAWASSEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(12/23/13) - Because of the weather and downed power lines, a state of emergency in Shiawassee County continues.

Officials told us, Monday afternoon, the main roads are OK to drive on, as salt trucks are out.

They would still like people to stay off back roads because they are still icy and there may be more power lines down.

If you do have to head out, be sure to leave extra time and take it easy.

The Shiawassee County Homeland Security & Emergency Management Office released the following press release on Monday, Dec. 23:

"A State of Emergency was declared in Shiawassee County to safeguard County residence and responders from encounters with icy roads, unnecessary road traffic and downed power lines. Additionally, the State of Emergency allows us to receive additional response and recovery assistance from the State which aids our over extended County assets.

This decision was made by County Officials early in the weather related storm damage recovery and management process, as the need to secure resources to manage to assist with our county-wide effort for clean-up and shelters was apparent from the onset in the early morning of Sunday 22 December.

Individuals needing information for heated shelter assistance should call 211.

The CodeRED notification system is a county-wide notification system to aid in the effort to inform the public of relevant changes in our State of Emergency. Please understand that although you may not need the assistance or information that this system is delivering, other do, this is the fastest way for County Emergency Management Officials to reach residence.

Also, up-to-date information can be obtained on the Counties Face Book page: Shiawassee County Emergency Management & Homeland Security or on twitter at @ShiaEMHS

Shiawassee County Emergency Management requests that If you need to drive to seek heated shelter, please keep to the main roads as they have been cleared of ice and debris. Side roads and dirt roads may still be considered unsafe with downed power lines and fallen branches"
