Ice storm hits Mid-Michigan, leaves thousands without power

(12/23/13) - Genesee County is the hardest hit in the state by the power outages, where more than 64,000 people are affected.

It could be several days before power is full restored. That means families will be spending Christmas in the dark.

"Real cold. I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling the same way, have to find somewhere warm to go at night," said Fred Peeler.

Downed power lines and limbs in the middle of the street seem to be a familiar look in several places in Genesee County.

All the ice and trees falling, wires falling everywhere, it's nice to have friends with generators," said Geoffery Carter.

For many people who live in the neighborhood off Lapeer Road in Flint, their only wish for Christmas isn't presents under the tree.

"I just hope that we get the power back before Christmas," said Darryl Bradley.

"There's no place to stay. A lot of the hotels are closed, a lot of the hotels are without power. Somebody need to come up with a million dollar idea to find a way to power a home," Peeler said.

A lot of the residents we spoke to don't have a generator. They're wearing extra layers and trying to find other ways to cope with the cold.

"We're burning the candles inside the house and we're using flashlights," Bradley said.

"We get a little heat from the stove because it's gas, other than that, we just making out. Putting on heavy clothes and try to keep warm," said Loretta Avery.

Although it's possible that some people in Genesee County may not have power until Saturday, they're remaining optimistic and hoping that Santa will be extra generous.
