Genesee County neighbors dealing with second cold, dark night

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(12/23/13) - Unfortunately, there's a chance that thousands of people could be without heat Monday night as Consumers Energy deals with what their calling the largest Christmas outage they've seen in more than a century.

"We run it for a few hours to get the house all toasty and then shut it back off," said Clint Taylor, turning on his generator in Grand Blanc Township.

Some haven't had power since Sunday.

"We've been out of power for two days now," Taylor said.

And some just joined the club.

"A little before 2 p.m. yesterday," said Kelly Miller in Burton.

Many are lighting their way with candles.

"Our only source of heat right now is our gas fire place, so I sit by that and I'm on Facebook on my phone," Miller said.

Jerry Weckler and his family don't have a generator to keep warm, and they, like many others, might not have power until the weekend. They're planning to pile on the blankets at night.

"I know a lot of people are in this situation," Weckler said.

"The way I gotta figure it, 60-something thousand people are dealing with it, I'm just one of them," Taylor said.

We talked with Consumers Energy on Tuesday afternoon. They tell us they're working around the clock to get the lights on.
