Flint Twp. Gander Mountain gets emergency shipment of generators, quickly sell out

FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(12/24/13) - Generators have been in high demand because of widespread power outages.

Gander Mountain, in Flint Township, was able to secure an emergency shipment.

The generators. however, have since sold out.

"We stayed open a little late last night to sell them," says store manager Kevin Schaeffer. "We opened early this morning."

Schaeffer said stores in areas hard hit by Sunday's storm, Flint Township and Lansing, for example, were able to place emergency orders.

The Flint Township store received its shipment within hours Monday.

"We were very lucky Champion was able to get it to us quickly," Schaeffer said.

About 85 were left at a discounted rate of $299, about $130 off the regular price, when ABC12 was there early Tuesday afternoon.

"This will be about 380 total we received in the store in the last couple of days," Schaeffer said.

That's well above the 25 generators they usually have in stock for winter weather.

The store called area police and fire departments to spread the word.

"And said if we knew anyone that needed one because we're out in the community, checking, on people to let them know," said Flint Fire Chief David Cox Jr.

He picked one up to keep one on hand at his home.

Schaeffer said another man was at the store to make a pretty big purchase.

"Four of them and he's going to pass 'em out to people who need them," he said. "Very nice Christmas present."

Jean Gearhart, of Fenton, was buying a propane heater for her sister.

"Doesn't look like she'll have power until Monday," Gearhart said.

Gearhart had to go elsewhere to find the propane she needed.

Schaeffer said that's been going fast and so has other stuff people need to try and stay warm until the power comes back on.

"The biggest shortage is still supply line pieces that go to some of these things," he said.

Gander Mountain will be open until 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, closed on Christmas Day, and back open Thursday morning.
