1 dead after SUV plunges into Saginaw River

Posted: Updated:

(12/28/13) - One man is dead and another recovering, Saturday afternoon, after a SUV plunged off the Center Street Bridge Wednesday night.

Our camera's were rolling as the SUV was being pulled out of the river and onto the Center Street Bridge in Saginaw. The front half of the SUV was submerged in the water while the back end was sticking up from the ice.

Police tell us 31-year-old Russell Nevitt was the passenger in the vehicle. When fire fighters arrived, he was underwater. The dive team rushed to pull him from the freezing water. They took him to a Saginaw hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Saginaw Police Department says the driver, 29-year-old Phillip McGowan, was able to climb out to safety after going into the Saginaw River.
