(12/26/13) - The crew at the Campus Den has been working around the clock these days, printing up thousands of Michigan State Rose Bowl shirts at its Mundy Township facility.
"It's a Super Bowl on top of a Super Bowl. Typically, we're very busy at the holidays with just normal retail business, but this is a championship on top of a holiday," said John Damoth, Campus Den co-owner.
Campus Den is one of the biggest manufacturers of Rose Bowl shirts. Thanks to the Spartans, retail sales at its 20 stores are up over the last holiday season. Online sales have quadrupled.
"We're shipping to Great Britain, Germany, Dubai, South Korea, wherever we have military bases, Japan," Damoth said.
The staff says the demand for MSU shirts is bigger than in recent years when Michigan has gone to Pasadena.
"They've had their share of Rose Bowls, but for Sparty, it's been a long, long, haul, so it's just through the roof," Damoth said.
Damoth has been in the T-shirt business for more than 30 years. He only remembers seeing this kind of frenzy once before.
"It probably reminds me a lot of the last Bad Boys championship, the back to back Bad Boys, so back in the '80s. It's been a long time," he said.
Winter Classic shirts sales have been rosey as well. Campus Den will be outside the Big House before and after the Red Wings Maple Leafs game on Jan. 1.
"We're going to probably have the equivalent of a full store with product between two retail locations around the stadium," Damoth said.
New Years Day could be an insanely busy one for staff at the Campus Den. While they're in Ann Arbor, they'll have to keep an eye on the Rose Bowl. If Michigan State wins, it's back to work immediately to produce Rose Bowl championship shirts.
"Probably about 500 to 700 pieces an hour, and we probably won't stop for a week," Damoth said.
The Campus Den has more than 40 different Michigan State Rose Bowl shirts.
