Help for fulfilling your physical fitness New Year's resolution

FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(01/01/14) - One of the most popular New Year's resolutions is to get in better physical condition, but many people break that promise to themselves after only a few days. We've all said it. This the year. But soon that determination begins to fade. A personal trainer says making a commitment with someone else can help.

"If we can find a partner of some sort, whether that be a workout buddy or that be a personal trainer, whether that be your spouse or even your kids can help you out. A lot of people are not dedicated enough to themselves but they're dedicated more to other people and sometimes they just need that extra appointment with somebody else," said Melanie Vaughn, Snap Fitness personal trainer.

But the style and attitudes of some trainers might not suit you.

"Each personal trainer does have their own way of doing things, so you definitely want to interview your personal trainers because not every trainer is for every person," Vaughn said.

And make sure your trainer knows what you're capable of and what your aspirations are.

"We're people who are here to help you and make sure you're going to reach all of your goals," Vaughn said.

Another potential path to discouragement is attempting too much too soon.

"Even if you start just walking for 20 minutes a day and then add some weights a little bit later or start with your diet and then add your working out later," Vaughn said.

Many of us have home exercise equipment we really don't use. It just becomes a clothes rack. If you join a gym, you stand a better chance of keeping your resolution.

"You get home and you see all the distractions and everything else there is to be done on the house and you think of everything else and you're really not focused on yourself and on your workout. When you come to the gym there's only one thing to be focused on and that's you and your health," Vaughn said.
