Mid-Michigan sporting apparel company celebrates MSU victory

MT. MORRIS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(01/02/14) - As soon as the clock ran out at the Rose Bowl, a team of specialists sprang into action in Mid-Michigan. Timing was crucial. If they acted too quickly, it could have cost them thousands.

The art work and raw material were ready. One more element was needed - an MSU victory. Campus Den co-owner John Damoth listened to the game in his car, then ran into his headquarters as the game wrapped up.

"We immediately started printing apparel last evening," Damoth said.

The first of thousands of screen printed T-shirts celebrating the Spartan's Rose Bowl win began coming off the presses, as many as 700 an hour.

"The first batch will go directly to our stores and then immediately after we'll start shipping to the website," Damoth said.

Campus Den has 18 stores across the state, but the website also accounts for a large portion of the sales.

"Immediately after the game about 4,000 people hit our website all at once and crashed the system. It took us about 15 minutes to get it back up and running, but we're going good now," Damoth said.

Ordering online allows out of state alumni and members of the military to share the joy.

Up to 24 employees will be working two shifts turning out the T-shirts for the next three to seven days. Management will keep a close eye on sales.

"We're pretty good at forecasting these things so we'll see. At first we'll give it a couple of days and we'll go from there. Based on what we've seen prior to this win with the lead up to the Rose Bowl, I suspect this will last a couple of weeks at least," Damoth said.

Four varieties of T-shirts will sell for $15 each. In a few days, work starts on hooded sweat shirts that will go for $35 a piece.

MSU's athletic department says fans wishing to greet the football team should wait Thursday night at the Skandalaris Football Center. People are being asked to stay away from Lansing's airport, since access to the team isn't planned there.
