(01/02/14) - There is a mystery of sorts concerning the Buena Vista School District.
It was dissolved by the state last year over financial problems. Now, two state championship trophies are missing.
Former school officials and the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame members would like to find them.
Before it was known as a basketball school, Buena Vista had some power house football teams in the '60s. The 1966 and 1967 Buena Vista High School football teams were both undefeated and both were mythical state champions.
The teams have been inducted into the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame. An exhibit on the team is currently being put together at the Castle Museum, the soon-to-be new home for the Hall of Fame.
Sports Museum Curator Jeffrey Cottrell was able to go through the former Buena Vista School buildings to retrieve the school's sports memorabilia.
"We were able to get a donation of all the state basketball championship trophies," he said.
While there were some items from the football teams, the state championship trophies were no where to be found.
"We got the trophies, there is no doubt we got the trophies," said John Cuthbertson.
Cuthbertson was the principal and athletic director of Buena Vista High School in the 1960s and remembers the pep assemblies when the trophies were awarded. He says they may have moved out trophy cases to make way for the basketball awards that were won in the 80's and 90's. He's been doing his own investigating to find the missing souvenirs.
"I've got a few more bushes to shake because someone might know something about it," he said.
Cottrell would like to have them for the hall of fame.
"I'm hoping somebody at the end grabbed them and took them home just because they were scared they were going to end up in a dumpster," he said.
Anyone with information on where those trophies might be is asked to give the The Castle Museum in Saginaw a phone call.
