Cold temps impact people who have to be outdoors

Posted: Updated:

(01/03/14) - The best advice in this extremely cold weather is to stay inside, but that's not always possible for some people.

Some people have to wait at the bus stop in this frigid weather.

ABC12 caught up with quite a few people who were waiting outside to get on the bus. They told us it's their only form of transportation.

If you have to be in the cold, you're advised to stay outside for a very short period of time. Wear plenty of extra clothing, such as extra shirts, socks and gloves.

It's recommended that you not even be out in these temps unless you absolutely have to.

"Right now I just got off the bus to try to get a money order and that didn't work out, so now I'm waiting for it to come back and that's the problem is waiting on it to come back because it takes anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes to come back and sometimes, like right here, there's nowhere to go inside to wait on it," said Peggy Brown.

"It's very tough after all of this weather and I have my kids out here with me too, it's cold," said Kema Cole.

Some organizations like Genesee Health System say most of their clients rely on public transportation. The organization that provides a variety of mental health services is telling people to be extra careful in these temps.

"Try and use common sense, use shelters when they can. Don't wait outside unprotected for long lengths of time and try to stay in shelters as much as possible," said Dan Russell, CEO of Genesee Health System.

Again, it's advised that you stay indoors as much as possible.
