Some road crews take a break from plowing

(01/05/14) - Sunday night, the roads are going from bad to worse in some areas.

ABC12 News has learned that some Genesee County crews are taking a break from plowing slick highways.

There were only 11 trucks on the road as of 11 p.m. Sunday.

Some crews were sent home about 6:30 p.m. They'll be back at it first thing Monday morning.

"Real bad out here, real slippery, cars stuck every street," one driver said.

The drivers ABC12 News spoke with ran into quite a bit of trouble. A good Samaritan had to help a Genesee County man make it home.

"I got stuck coming home from work after doing 9 1/2 day at work. I plow snow, then I got stuck in the snow," said Eric Hurtado.

As the snow continues to fall overnight, crews in Genesee County are preparing for a busy day Monday.

More than 50 trucks will be out on the roads.

John Dalym, with the Genesee County Road Commission, says it was important to send his crews home early Sunday evening.

"The reason is, they had been on since 3:30 this morning and at that point they've worked for 14 hours straight and we're looking ahead and seeing that they're probably going to have to put in another full day tomorrow, so it's important to get them home and get them rested and to time so that we could bring them back to be able to support the main roads for the commute on Monday morning," he said.

In the meantime, some drivers are trying to figure out how they're going to get home in all of this.

"It's crazy out here and it's cold and I got to drive over everything, but I got good tires though so I'm alright," said Aaron Ivory.
