Saginaw Township Kmart store closed after roof collapse

Posted: Updated:

(01/06/14) - Investigators say a roof collapse at a Saginaw Township store might be weather related.

Police and fire crews found the problem when they were dispatched to the Kmart at Gratiot and Center shortly before 4 a.m. Monday.

Only one store employee was inside at the time. That employee was not hurt.

The store is closed while workers and safety officials assess the damage. The store manager tells us they could be closed for a week or more.

We talked to Pete Vondette, owner of Vondette Roofing in Saginaw, and he said flat roofs can be trouble in seriously bad weather like this.

"Remember before the first snow we got that rain? Then the sleet, and the first set of six inches of snow? That's never left," he said.

And just now, Old Man Winter dumped roughly eight inches more.

Vondette's guess is that's what caused the Kmart roof to cave. But he said if you're thinking of cleaning off your roof to prevent something like this, proceed with caution.

"The biggest problem with cleaning off roofs is you risk ruining part of the roof, it's easy to damage it, that's why we say have someone who knows what they're doing do it," he said.

And it can be dangerous. Vondette said you can spread salts up there to melt the ice and snow, but the wrong kind can be hard on your roof.

He said it's best to let a professional do the dirty work.

"If you want to try it yourself just be careful," he said.
