Meals on Wheels halts food deliveries due to weather

Posted: Updated:

(01/07/14) - The weather is forcing some agencies that help those in need to halt services.

The sub zero temperatures are putting everything from school to essential services on ice.

On Tuesday, G-CCARD, which runs the Meals on Wheels program, halted food deliveries for a second day in row.

"This is the first full shut down that we've had in a couple years," said Laura Rahmaad, senior nutrition director. "It's the safety of the drivers, the drivers can get frostbite, cases of hypothermia and trucks and cars getting stuck because the streets are not plowed."

The program, which helps thousands of seniors in need, was prepared for this. When record low temps were forecasted, seniors were given an emergency meal of non-perishables to last them through the closure.

There are very limited deliveries being made in severe cases.

"High risk seniors that we have out there that get ensure, so liquid supplement, so we do have some that are out there delivering to those on those main streets that are unable to eat and can't eat a normal meal," Rahmaad said.

Operations should go back to normal on Wednesday. In the meantime, a plea from agencies everywhere to look out for all of those in need.

"With them being in their homes, knowing that many times that's the only person they see is the delivery person, so we try to keep an eye out, have that phone contact as much as we can. Asking neighbors and family to please check on your elderly," Rahmaad said.
