Snow-covered sidewalks present danger to residents forced to walk

FLINT (WJRT) -

(01/07/14) - Two days after the third heaviest snowfall in Flint history, many streets and sidewalks are still covered in more than a foot of snow.

That's presenting a danger to pedestrians forced to walk in those streets.

For some Flint residents, a vehicle isn't an option right now. So, they're walking, and putting themselves at risk.

It's a common sight after a major snowstorm - while plows clear major streets, sidewalks remain buried, forcing pedestrians into the danger zone..

"I mean, you never know. One of these cars might slide or cross you and hit you. It's just horrible they haven't done nothing about these sidewalks," said Robert Burke, of Flint.

Burke was walking in daylight on Tuesday, but other times he has to be out much earlier.

"I leave home at 6 a.m. in the morning to go down here and I really fear for it in the morning times. You never know who is paying attention and who's not," he said.

While many walkways remain covered, some residents try their best to create a path. After his snow blower broke, DeCarlo Mitchell picked up a shovel to help his relatives dig out.

"It's kind of bad out here. This is like the worst winter I've seen since I've been around. We don't have no plow trucks out, no salt trucks out. All the streets are bad, especially on the north end, side streets, people are stuck everywhere," he said.

Mitchell says the problem is made worse by all the abandoned homes in the city of Flint.

"People need to come together for their community and help out. It's very dangerous in the street because the streets are very slippery. All it takes is one patch of black ice and that's an accident. Somebody might be hurt," he said.

According to a Flint City ordinance, owners or occupants of sidewalks in front of and adjacent to a building or lot must clear them in 24 hours or face a municipal civil infraction.
