Families find "cabin fever" remedies

Posted: Updated:

(01/07/14) - The extra cold temperatures meant another day off from school for most Mid-Michigan kids. Many are now on day 17 of no school.

A lot of parents are running out of ways to keep their kids occupied, but thanks to Facebook friends, they got through another day.

It's something almost every parent has heard.

"Well, being inside trapped in the house, it's starting to get boring a little bit," said 9-year-old Lydia Oster, from Sanford.

Even with her new Monster High dolls that she can D.J. with, this Meridian Elementary student is singing the blues after extra snow days gave her extra time at home with her 3-year-old brother, Noah.

Their mom Amanda loves the extended vacation, but would much rather be outside sledding or tubing. But she doesn't dare take them out when the wind chill is so low.

"Definitely the tension of just being around each other 24/7, not being able to go do anything. There's been some attitudes I would say," Amanda Oster said.

Thanks to an idea from Facebook, the Oster family is chilling out with "Snow Ice Cream".

It's made up of one gallon of snow, a pinch of salt, one cup of white sugar, one tablespoon of vanilla extract and two cups of milk, all whisked together. You can add food coloring for flare.

The Oster kids loved it.

"Mmm, it is good," Lydia said.

From Sanford to Bay City, a lot of people have "cabin fever".

"A little stir crazy," said Rebecca Young, the mother of three kids.

That's why the Young family asked for help.

"These are suggestions from our friends on Facebook," Young said.

Not only has Zoe, Chalmer and Wyatt been out of school for 17 days, so have their parents.

Rebecca works for Bay City Schools, while Matt teaches in Saginaw.

First on their "Snowed In Adventures" list was a scavenger hunt.

"Took them all over the house for about a half-hour, and they were running. So I was like, 'yeah, exercise'," Young said.

Also on the list - building with Legos, putting together a puzzle, building a tent city, and doing a cold weather improv skit.

And last but not least, they plan to do something brave. "We're going to end the day by going out to dinner and braving the weather, and leaving the house," Young said.
