Clean up continues after Snowstorm 2014

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(01/07/14) - The snowfall is over from this monster storm, but the cleanup is not.

County and city plows have been out in force since Saturday. Genesee County Road Commission crews will be working through the night once again.

Right on the heels of the Christmas week ice storm, they have been tackling nearly a foot and a half of snow, since Saturday.

The City of Flint hopes to have the roads cleared by Wednesday night. The county aims to be done by Thursday.

Clearing ice and snow are top priorities, even from a budgeting standpoint.

"If we have to rob the maintenance coffers to do that, that's simply the way it is. We get "x" amount of money to operate on every year," said John Daly, of the Genesee County Road Commission.

The strategy for this storm has been to clear the main roads first, then go after the less traveled ones, in carefully planned out routes.

"We didn't feel that with the scope of this storm, it was something we could attack head on," Daly said.

The commission is revisiting I-75 and I-69 every night and early in the morning. It's a necessary part of the process, primarily because of all of the drifting snow.

"We hit everything else in the daytime, and that is what has allowed us to incrementally get through the system," Daly said.

Now they're about half way through that system. Main roads are covered, local and subdivision roads are getting knocked out, and they are getting subcontractor help in Mt. Morris, Flint and Genesee Townships.

A big problem the city is facing is that people are still leaving cars on the streets. An official notice Tuesday says Flint will tow cars that are blocking plows, or issue tickets.

They are asking again that everyone get their cars off the streets.

The next worry - warmer temperatures, which will bring huge relief, but could also cause melting, and possibly flooding in some areas.
