Another day of no school for many in Mid-Michigan

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -

(01/07/14) - Already Tuesday night, dozens upon dozens of school districts in Mid-Michigan are closed Wednesday because of this brutal weather.

There are a lot of factors that school leaders have to consider before canceling class.

The roads, blowing snow and wind chill all play a very important role when it comes to canceling school.

"It's real cold, it's like dangerous. That's why my hands keep freezing," said Kiante Smith.

"It's dangerous on our children, especially the kids that have to walk to school," said Erma Smith, a parent.

The dangerously cold weather means an extended winter break for Mid-Michigan kids.

"I don't want to go so school, so yeah, I'm pretty excited about that," said Dresheiontey Smith.

"Kind of sad because I was looking forward to school," Kiante said.

When districts decide to close because of dangerous temps, it's based on a scale from the CDC.

The scale not only considers the temperature, but wind chill.

These are the same conditions that a child would have to stand in at the bus stop or walk to school in.

"I think it was a good suggestion for them not to go to school but then they going to be missing out on school also, but what's important, they life," Erma said.

Getting a bus from one point to the next is something else that districts have to worry about in the brutal temps.

"Will the bus start? Most buses are diesel and at very low temperatures, the fuel gels up and makes it unable for the bus to start," said Jerry Johnson of The GISD.

Road conditions also play a factor. Paved roads versus a dirt road can have a different impact on the buses. It's a risk districts aren't willing to take.

School districts also take recommendations from the Genesee County Road Commission about when it's best to use salt.

If the temperature is too cold, the salt doesn't help melt ice.
