Michigan Blood looking for donors as need increases

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -

(01/08/14) - The weather isn't just causing road related problems - it's also presenting a challenge in the health care system. Blood donations are dramatically low.

Tamar Chipp, with Michigan Blood, says donations are at near historic lows, and the numbers are being directly attributed to the cold and snow.

"Normally on a typical day, we see about 400 donations and on Monday we saw about 44 donations collected, so that just gives you the scope and magnitude of what we're experiencing," Chipp said.

The non-profit helps provide blood to 40 hospitals that serve thousands of patients. The need is always high.

"We know that safety is always a concern and it's very important, but if people are in a position to donate , please come in, it makes a huge difference," Chipp said.

Michigan Blood has four donation centers in the Great Lakes Bay region and daily mobile blood drives. For information on locations, click HERE.
