(01/08/14) - It's a major expansion of the Health Plus Crim Festival of Races. The Crim Fitness Foundation is making plans for its first ever winter-time race .
"We're calling it the Run Your Ice Off, and it's going to be a run/walk event for anyone, a 5K that starts right at the UM-Flint campus and goes up and down the Flint River trail. It ends with a great celebration, hot chocolate and a lot of fun.," said Andy Younger, Crim Race director.
The Run Your Ice Off is set for Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22 in downtown Flint. It'll be cold, and organizers wouldn't mind a few flakes.
"Snow coming down is always beautiful and a nice setting I think, but we're not necessarily trying to punish people," Younger said.
The event is part of the new Crim Grassroots Race series - four races in all, one each in February, June, July and September.
"Different themes for each one, and the idea is that fitness, running, and walking is a year-round activity," Younger said.
On top of that, registration for the Crim Adult Training program opened this week. It's 15 weeks long and begins in May. New this year - vouchers for several new summertime warm up races, and a pre-training program designed to help shake off that winter rust.
"It includes some health coaching, some nutrition counseling and some fitness activities to help everyone get geared up," said Erin Lamb, CrimFit Program Director.
This is all leads up to the 38th annual Crim Festival of Races 10-mile race day, which this year will be on Aug. 23.
"It's going to be bigger and better than ever. We're introducing the Crim Half, an opportunity to run the Crim 10-mile and the 5K, which puts you exactly at a half marathon. You get double the medals and it's a lot of fun," Younger said.
