Weather takes its toll on Mid-Michigan businesses

FLINT (WJRT) -

(01/08/14) - This week's storm and falling temperatures are having a chilling effect on some local businesses.

That's because many people are snowed in or just don't want to brave the roads and brutal cold.

If you have a snow removal company, business has been good.

But for many business owners, several weeks of nasty weather has a real impact on their bottom line.

"Mother Nature is the king, she'll win every time," said Ed Barbieri, owner of Da Edoardo North.

The nasty weather is taking its toll on businesses like Da Edoardo North. The restaurant has been open all week, but the customers aren't trickling in so quickly.

Business is down by about 80 percent.

"It is frustrating because you do have to pay bills, you do have to put food on the table for your family," Barbieri said.

This isn't the first time the restaurant has run into problems like this. In November and December, they had to close because the power was out.

Everyone there is hoping for brighter days ahead because there's no way they'll be able to make up for the loss revenue.

"Even though I predict that it will be busy this weekend, I hope it will be busy this weekend, it's not going to cover Sunday, Monday and Tuesday," Barbieri said.

Car dealership aren't so lucky either.

"Definitely screeching halt," said Jeannine Ferguson, with Applegate Chevrolet.

On a normal day, Applegate Chevrolet in Flint is used to seeing dozens of customers who come in to look at cars or get service for their vehicles, but this week was a different story.

"Monday was very slow here, you know what in service they had two people come in for oil changes if you can believe that," Ferguson said.

"On Tuesday, we had one person come in for a truck," she said.

Local businesses are hoping to get a break this weekend with the warmer weather on the way. A lot of them say they are just trying to stay positive.
