County road crews start sanding icy intersections

Posted: Updated:

(01/08/14) - County intersections remain icy, following the severe weather we've experienced the last few days, but the process of sanding them has started.

John Daly, with the Genesee County Road Commission, said crews are hitting major intersections first and with sand.

"Salt stops working at about 15 degrees Fahrenheit, that's almost summer by these conditions, so we're using pretty much a straight sand mixture," Daly said.

Daly said snow has been cleared around most of the major intersections of the primary, local roads and state trunk lines and now they're concentrating on making another pass with that sand.

Daly has compared what crews did during a December 2000 snowstorm as the snowfall then was close to what we saw this week.

"It took us 5.5 days to clear the county after that snowfall. It looks like right now we're going to do this in four," he said.

Daly said they're working with about 20 percent fewer people and pieces of equipment, "I think we're holding our own against this storm."
