Bay City reopens Fire Station 5

Posted: Updated:

(01/09/14) - A Bay City community is celebrating after Fire Station number 5 reopened Thursday. Budget cuts shut it down in 2009.

It's taken five years and lots of planning, but public safety and city officials say they can now meet the community's needs more efficiently.

Now, people living near East Smith Street in Bay City can find comfort in knowing crews are a lot closer in case of an emergency.

"I think that's great. I use to live like two blocks from there and it was really sad when it closed," said Linda Anderson.

Response times will be much faster, which makes homeowners happy.

"I'd like to know that if my house catches on fire the fire department would get there in a good amount of time," said Stacy Arnold.

Cuts in funding hit the city hard over the past few years, but city leaders have come up with a cost saving plan.

"We did a reorganization within our police department and fire department essentially going to public safety, which is saving the city money by reorganizing some people, moving them around and eliminating some positions," said Dana Muscott, interim city manager.
"We'll run the station on a combination of full time firefighters and public safety officers," said Public Safety Chief Karey Prieur.

Public safety police officers have been trained to help put out flames. With fire station 5 open, Bay City now has four operating fire stations.
